A Rich History

Yosemite has a long and complex history shaped by Indigenous communities, explorers, conservationists, and visitors. The area has been home to Native American people for thousands of years, long before Yosemite became a national park. Yosemite Valley became increasingly known outside the region during the nineteenth century. Its dramatic scenery inspired growing interest in protecting the area, eventually contributing to the creation of Yosemite National Park in 1890. Today, Yosemite is protected for future generations to enjoy. Conservation efforts help protect its forests, wildlife, waterfalls, meadows, and unique geological features while allowing visitors to experience the park.
